If you have a server or piece of hardware that the media drive has failed and do not have a working spare handy.
It is an emergency and you need to be able to boot a utility/installable cd/dvd from that nonfunctioning drive.

Normally you can just select boot from usb in the bios, but what if the bios does not support booting from usb.

Well using the Plop Boot manager will allow you to boot from usb (even if the bios does not support this feature) using their floppy disk to redirect the boot process to the usb port.

Just insert your bootable usb drive and then boot the floppy Plop Boot Manager floppy disk and select usb from the menu.
This is a great utility that has helped me more than once and best of all its free.
